SESSION 6: ASSERTIVENESS

STEP 7: End-of-session reinforcement

STEP 7: End-of-session reinforcement

Note for the trainer: Reinforce assertiveness through a memorable image as a synthesis of the five content modules of the training — RULER, Brain Modes, Empathy and Conflict Resolution. Ask participants to answer the question, “What is the first thing I will say tomorrow when helping a child to defend themselves?” and use their responses to conclude the session.

Method: Metaphor/anecdote.

Implementation steps:
The Boundary Compass metaphor: The trainer reinforces the module with the following words:

“Dear caregivers, assertiveness is neither an aggressive fortress that builds impenetrable walls around itself and attacks everyone who approaches, nor a passive piece of land without boundaries that anyone may trample upon. Assertiveness is a safe bridge with a clearly defined entrance and boundaries, extending towards other people when a connection is needed. We will neither allow our boundaries to be violated passively nor protect them by aggressively overriding other people. Recognising our own value and the value of the child and colleague before us, we will build the bridge ‘I am valuable, and you are valuable’.”
