Trainer Handbook

SESSION 1: OPENING

STEP 3: TRAINING OBJECTIVES

STEP 3: Clarifying the Training Objectives - Expectation Tree

Note to the trainer: This step enables you both to understand participants' needs and to convey the message that “your voice matters”. Approach the notes with genuine interest; observations from the field are both powerful and deeply felt. Leave the tree displayed on the board throughout the programme.

Method: Interactive sharing.

Materials: Sticky notes in different colours (two colours: one for expectations and one for challenges), pens and a large tree template drawn on the board.

Implementation steps:

Instructions: The trainer distributes the sticky notes and explains:

“I am now giving you two coloured pieces of paper. On the yellow one, write: ‘The most important thing I want to learn from this training is...’ On the green one, write: ‘The moment I find most difficult when working with children in the institution is...’ You do not have to write your name. When you have finished, place the yellow notes on the branches of the tree and the green notes on its roots.”

Reading and reflection: The trainer reads the sticky notes aloud, groups similar themes and says:

“When I look at this tree, I see some very powerful things. At the roots there are very honest observations such as ‘I do not know what to do during an anger outburst’ and ‘when a child starts shouting, I lose control too’. On the branches there are wishes such as ‘learning to stay calm’ and ‘forming a genuine bond with the child’. This tree is the map for the weeks ahead. And I promise you this: during this programme we will address every question at the roots.”
