About the Project

Empowered by Empathy – Emotional Intelligence in Caring for Disadvantaged Children is an Erasmus+ Small-scale Partnership in Adult Education focused on strengthening the capacity of caregivers to support the emotional and social development of disadvantaged children.

Why the Project Matters

The project was developed from the recognition that children who experience parental inadequacy, separation from their families or institutional care may face particular challenges in emotional regulation, attachment and social development.

In these circumstances, adults who provide day-to-day care have an especially important role in creating supportive, empathetic and emotionally responsive relationships.

The project therefore focuses primarily on the adults who care for disadvantaged children, while ultimately seeking to contribute to children's healthy emotional development and social inclusion.

Main Objective

The main objective of Empowered by Empathy is to develop, implement, maintain and disseminate an education programme that supports caregivers in providing care in ways that strengthen children's emotional-intelligence skills and healthy emotional development, with particular attention to children in institutional care.

Project Approach

The project combines research, programme development, training, digital learning and dissemination.

  • a Needs Analysis designed to identify caregivers' needs, risks and demands and differences between participating contexts;
  • a modular Emotional Development Supporting Education Programme for caregivers;
  • practical learning through role play, case studies and group discussions;
  • a Guide for Emotional Development Supporting Education Program Trainers;
  • a Digital Education Platform providing access to the programme, project outputs and Open Educational Resources;
  • testing and feedback involving caregivers and programme implementers;
  • dissemination through project events, partner networks and European channels.

The education programme was conceived to be multicultural, inclusive and culturally sensitive so that it can be adapted to different social groups and participating contexts.

Target Groups

The primary target groups are adults who provide care for disadvantaged children, particularly those caring for children in institutional settings.

  • caregivers working in children's organisations;
  • foster families;
  • single-parent families;
  • families receiving socio-economic support;
  • guardians and other adults responsible for child care;
  • social-service and education professionals;
  • partner organisation members and staff;
  • other caregivers accessing the Digital Education Platform.

Open Educational Resources

A central principle of the project is that its education programme, trainer resources and Digital Education Platform should provide openly accessible educational materials.

The resources are intended to remain available beyond the immediate project activities and support wider reuse and dissemination.
