Note to the trainer: This step is a completely practical game. Enable participants to experience directly how one-way listening without feedback or interaction breaks communication.
Method: Practical game.
Materials: One blank sheet of A4 paper for each participant.
1. “Paper Tearing” game: The trainer gives each participant an A4 sheet of paper and asks everyone to close their eyes. The trainer sets the rule: “Asking questions, speaking and opening your eyes are strictly forbidden.” 2. Giving instructions: The trainer gives the following commands in sequence:
“Fold the paper in half... Tear off the top-left corner... Fold the paper in half again... Tear off the bottom-left corner...”
3. Evaluation: When participants open their eyes, they see that the papers have been torn in completely different ways. The trainer emphasises: “As you can see, one-way listening without feedback such as mutual interaction, asking questions and eye contact completely disrupts communication. When communicating with children, we also need interaction to ensure that they have understood us correctly.”
